Anthropic API adds webhooks, user profiles and a web-fetch off switch

Two October 20 entries in the Claude Platform release notes add tracking and admin controls.

By The Gayzette, with Claude · 2 min read · Wonder ◆◆◆◇◇

Disclosure: Anthropic makes Claude, the model that helps make this paper. Two entries dated Oct 20 in the Claude Platform release notes add new controls to the Claude API. User profiles let you tell Anthropic which of your end customers each API request is for. Organization webhooks (automatic messages sent to an address you choose when something happens) arrive in the Admin API, in beta with the `webhooks-2026-10-07` beta header.

OFFweb fetchRequest refused!
Illustration · The Gayzette

Org admins can also switch off web fetch, the tool that lets Claude read a web page, from the Console Capabilities page. With it off, the notes say, "a Messages API request that includes the web fetch tool fails with a 400 error," which is the web's way of saying the request was refused. The same notes put the Claude Tag API in beta for Enterprise orgs and move inference hooks out of beta for Enterprise.

On your desk: if any automation or client-facing tool calls the Claude API, user profiles let you attribute requests to end customers, and the new webhooks (beta; contact your Anthropic account team for access) notify you when Anthropic restricts or bans one of your user profiles. Check that none of your requests lean on web fetch before an admin flips that switch.

Editor's note

The Managing Editor

Today's paper leads with new Claude API controls (webhooks, user profiles and a web-fetch off switch), followed by two big open models, Google Cloud's Opus 5.5 fast mode, and two brain-science notes on LSD rhythms and chest vibration. Add a crop-circle check, five straight news items, and a Good Ten with a record pumpkin, a Roman roadside station and a Tessa Virtue dance debut.

The lead was written by Sonnet this morning to save budget, and The Good Ten runs 8 items (trimmed for budget).

Your votes still favor giant pumpkins and Roman finds, so both are back in The Good Ten; no beat changes saved.

Grant Watch and the Droplet Desk had nothing new verified, so they're off today. Human Design lines come from the HD Toolkit.

Meta releases Muse Spark Open, an 816B open-weight model

A giant model with downloadable weights, per its Hugging Face card.

Meta's Hugging Face model card (Oct 15) lists Muse Spark Open at 816B total parameters (the numbers a model learns) with 42B active at a time, a 1M-token context at inference (how much text it can read at once), and weights in BF16 and NVFP4, two ways of storing those numbers. The card says NVFP4 needs "at least 700GB of VRAM" (graphics-card memory) and BF16 about 2TB.

816BToo big!
Illustration · The Gayzette

The license is the Muse Model License, which requires displaying "Built with Muse Spark Open." The card lists scores of 89.2 on MCP-Atlas, 80.4 on OSWorld Verified and 76.4 on Terminal-Bench 2.1. The caveat: it is nine days old, and we read the card but ran nothing, so treat the scores as the listing's numbers.

On your desk: not runnable at home, but an open-weight option on third-party hosts. If an n8n workflow ever swaps in a hosted model, the credit-line license term is the first thing to check.

LSD pushes brain rhythms faster, weaker and more complex

A Communications Biology study from Université de Montréal's CoCo Lab, via PsyPost.

Seventeen healthy volunteers got 75 micrograms of LSD by IV in one session and a saline placebo (a dummy) in another, 14 days apart, single-blind (volunteers did not know which). Alpha and beta are bands of rhythm in brain-wave recordings: alpha peak frequency rose about 2 Hz and beta about 5 Hz, yet their power still dropped. Two scores of how unpredictable a signal is, Lempel-Ziv complexity and Higuchi fractal dimension, rose, especially in the back visual regions.

Faster!
Illustration · The Gayzette

Classifiers (programs trained to tell the sessions apart) managed over 82% accuracy from frequency shifts and over 76% from complexity measures, where chance is 50%. The caveat: 17 people is small, and the report says the music result "is exploratory and should not be over-interpreted."

On your desk: for Universe Year, fractal dimension is a math idea (how rough a shape is at every zoom) measured on a living brain, a nice bridge between your two study tracks.

Chest vibration plus meditation tied to denser brain pathways

Read the brief

A Neuropsychopharmacology study from Emory University School of Medicine, via PsyPost.

Researchers including Negar Fani randomized 116 trauma-exposed adults with elevated dissociation (feeling detached from your body or surroundings). Half meditated with a sternum-mounted vibration device and half without, across eight brief mindfulness sessions. Only the vibration group showed increased nerve density in the corticospinal tract, a bundle of nerve fibers linking brain and body, and bigger gains in body awareness. Both groups reduced dissociation by similar amounts.

The caveat: this is an interim analysis of an ongoing trial, the outcomes were self-reported, and our source is a secondary report. This is a science note, not advice.

On your desk: for your consciousness reading, note that dissociation fell in both groups, so the vibration did not add there; what differed was a body-awareness score and a scan measure.

Two Israeli soldiers killed near Hebron; Israel locks down West Bank

ConfirmedThe Israeli military said it killed two Palestinian gunmen who attacked a reserve battalion on Oct 23. Two Israeli soldiers were killed, and Israel's ambulance service reported at least three other soldiers injured (Al Jazeera's live blog caption says at least five wounded, per officials). Al Jazeera reports PM Netanyahu ordered a full West Bank lockdown on Friday, and the army said late Friday the Hebron operation would last "for several days." Al Jazeera correspondents report nearly 1,000 checkpoints and gates closed, raids on at least 15 northern West Bank towns with dozens detained, and a three-storey building bulldozed in Hebron. The exact location of the attack is unclear.

Claimed by Mustafa Barghouti (Palestinian National Initiative) and Itamar Ben-Gvir (National Security Minister)Barghouti says the closure turns each city and village into "a small prison" and that collective punishment "will lead to explosions." Ben-Gvir called for Israel to take full control of the West Bank.

  • Israeli government and military: The lockdown and Hebron operation respond to an attack on soldiers.
  • Palestinian figures such as Barghouti: The measures are collective punishment of civilians.

Ministers in Istanbul urge no new US attack on Iran; US envoy says strike possible

What is known

ConfirmedAs reported by Al Jazeera, foreign ministers of the UK, France, Germany, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt and Italy met in Istanbul on Oct 23. The joint statement of four of them (Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt) called for full resumption of secure passage through Hormuz and condemned Houthi escalation. On Oct 21 the State Department ordered nonemergency personnel and families to leave Saudi Arabia after Houthi attacks. Brent crude climbed above $110 on Oct 22.

Claimed by US ambassador Tom Barrack and IRGC spokesman Hossein MohebiBarrack said Washington could "absolutely" strike Iran this weekend, that Trump is open to a deal, and that any action would not aim at regime change. IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi said Iran's doctrine is now "offensive and asymmetrical." An Al Jazeera linked headline says Iran says seven ships were hit in Hormuz (not independently verified). Reports that the US and Israel plan attacks are unconfirmed.

  • Turkiye, France, Italy: Fidan: none of the participating countries approved of another military attack on Iran. Barrot: escalation "would create nothing but losers." Tajani: the problem cannot be solved militarily.
  • United States (Barrack, Rubio): A deal is open but "extremely difficult" (Rubio, Oct 21), and Iran must stop targeting Hormuz shipping.
  • Iran: Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, said Iran prefers diplomacy but has the means to sustain a response if war continues.

Ebola: Kenya reports second death; WHO starts vaccine trial in DR Congo

What is known

ConfirmedKenya's Ministry of Health says a 65-year-old woman who developed symptoms in quarantine died; she was a close relative of the Kenyan man who died Oct 5 after traveling from DRC. Seven patients are in treatment, there are nine confirmed cases including two deaths, and 135 contacts are quarantined. The ministry says all cases are one cluster with "no evidence of community spread." WHO Director-General Tedros said on social media Oct 23 that trial participants were vaccinated with Ervebo in Bunia, Ituri province.

Claimed by WHO and CEPIErvebo is approved for the Zaire strain, and the trial will test whether it also protects against Bundibugyo, the outbreak's strain. CEPI says Oxford and Moderna candidates made for Bundibugyo are expected to enter trials "shortly."

From the history: The Mowing-Devil (22 Aug 1678) is a five-page Hertfordshire pamphlet whose woodcut shows a devil mowing an oat field in concentric rings. Fortean Times surfaced it in 1989, and it appears to be the earliest known image of a crop circle. In the tale a farmer haggles down a mower's price for his oats and still refuses it, saying "the devil himself should mow his oats"; overnight the field appears ablaze and the oats are found cut in circles.
