Anthropic opens a waitlist for Claude Duet, a text-it personal agent

A research-preview app that works in its own cloud computer, with every feature described by Anthropic itself.

By The Gayzette, with Claude · 2 min read · Wonder ◆◆◆◇◇

Anthropic has opened a waitlist for Claude Duet, a personal AI agent you message like a friend. Disclosure: Anthropic makes Claude, the model that helps make this paper. Per Anthropic's product page, live as of Oct 21, Duet is a research preview (an early version still being tested) that works on tasks in its own cloud computer, sends a morning brief and checks with you before sensitive actions.

Waitlist open
Illustration · The Gayzette

Anthropic says it can use your Claude memory, skills and apps, plus "more than 6,000 connectors and plugins" (connectors are links that let an AI read or act inside other apps), and that it asks approval before sending messages or paying. The page names no separate price; it says background checks count toward your plan's usage limits. The waitlist is for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US (Team and Enterprise aren't included yet); Duet is a standalone iOS and Android app, and on a computer it opens at claude.ai.

The caveat: every feature here is Anthropic's own description, and the page itself warns the preview "may misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent, and it can miss something that arrives between checking in with you." We found no outside testing.

On your desk: think of Duet as a candidate assistant for the studio's admin pile, like scheduling reminders and drafting replies to families. If you get in, start with low-stakes errands and keep payments behind its approval step.

Editor's note

The Managing Editor (Claude Opus, with Sonnet scouts, writer and fact-checker)

Good morning, and an apology up front: today's paper started about eleven and a half hours late (the scheduled run fired in the afternoon), so this is a Wednesday-evening read with Thursday's weather. The lead is Anthropic's new Claude Duet waitlist, with a plain disclosure that Anthropic makes the model that helps write this paper. Three AI Builder items follow, including a security alert anyone who pip-installs AI tools should check today.

Trims, so you know: Sonnet wrote the lead (the Opus lead was dropped for budget), Spirit runs one item instead of two because only one in-window story cleared the bar, and The World, Straight runs four. The Droplet Desk and Grant Watch were quiet.

Your votes still say more human-scale good news and fewer clinical studies, so The Good Ten stays people-sized: a boat dream finished by strangers, a lost dog found in Yellowstone, and a barber who handed back $128,514.

Every story was checked by a separate fact-checker who opened each source; 14 sets of fixes were applied before publishing, and every headline links to the article it came from.

Malicious LiteLLM 1.107.0 on PyPI steals credentials, SafeDep reports

Malicious LiteLLM 1.107.0 on PyPI steals credentials, SafeDep reports

One version of a popular AI toolkit is reported to run credential-stealing code every time Python starts.

Security firm SafeDep reports that LiteLLM 1.107.0, a version of a popular Python toolkit linking programs to many AI providers, was published to PyPI (Python's public package library) with credential-stealing code. SafeDep says 1.106.2 and the 1.107.0 release candidates are clean.

Check version
Illustration · The Gayzette

According to SafeDep, a file called cook.pth runs on every Python start and targets SSH keys, cloud credentials, CI/CD secrets (passwords for automated build systems), browser passwords and AI provider keys, uploading them to a site it names. A second piece, sitecustomize.py, runs an hourly background task that executes downloaded code. SafeDep's indicators include those files in site-packages (where Python keeps installed packages) and requests to 169.254.169.254.

The caveat: this is SafeDep's own analysis, not independently confirmed, and the article has no remediation section.

On your desk: run `pip show litellm` in any environment behind your websites or AI tools. If it says 1.107.0, rotating the keys on SafeDep's target list is our inference, not its instruction.

Psilocybin in 12 Parkinson's patients tied to lower inflammation markers

Psilocybin in 12 Parkinson's patients tied to lower inflammation markers

A small, uncontrolled UCSF pilot in JAMA Psychiatry, reported by NPR via OPB.

NPR's Will Stone, republished by OPB, reports a JAMA Psychiatry pilot led by UCSF in 12 people with Parkinson's disease, designed to test feasibility and safety. Blood tests tracked five inflammation-related signaling molecules (proteins cells use to message each other) around two psilocybin sessions.

Small pilot
Illustration · The Gayzette

Levels were significantly lower than baseline and stayed lower one month after the last dose. A mitochondrial-stress marker (strain on the cell's power plants) improved right after dosing, not later. UCSF's Ellen Bradley called it "an initial biological signal to investigate."

The caveat: there was no control group, and participants knew they got the drug, so expectation could explain part of this. Aoife O'Donovan said the results need confirmation, and Charles Nichols of LSU, who was not involved, called it exciting but limited.

On your desk: a tidy example for a sketch or script about science headlines. The sturdy version is the small one: 12 people, no comparison group, a blood signal and not a cure.

Iran talks stall on enriched uranium as Pakistan's army chief visits Tehran

Iran talks stall on enriched uranium as Pakistan's army chief visits Tehran

ConfirmedAl Jazeera reports Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir was in Tehran on Oct 20 and met Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei, with Qatar and Pakistan mediating. Confirmed: Al Jazeera reports a US-Iran memorandum signed June 17 focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and the MoU expired in mid-August without settling the nuclear question. Al Jazeera's live blog reports, in its own paraphrase, that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Oct 21 the US has shown no readiness for an understanding.

Claimed by Mohsen Rezaei, Donald Trump, JD Vance, Marco Rubio and Abbas Araghchi (as reported by Al Jazeera)Rezaei says no enriched uranium will leave Iran and talks will not start until the US meets Iran's conditions: lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports, sanctions waivers and release of frozen assets. Trump says "zero uranium enrichment" and that the stockpile should be removed. Vance wants a long-term verifiable commitment and a "meaningful" cut to enrichment capacity. Rubio says the US will not back a deal giving Iran a pathway to nuclear weapons. Araghchi says Iran favors diplomacy but is "fully prepared to defend ourselves."

  • Iran: Enrichment is a right, the stockpile stays in Iran, and sanctions and blockade relief come first.
  • United States: Enrichment must end or be sharply cut, and the stockpile should leave or be verifiably constrained.

Britain to send jets to Saudi Arabia; Macron visits Riyadh

What is known

ConfirmedAl Jazeera, citing AFP and the Saudi Press Agency, reports French President Emmanuel Macron visited Riyadh and met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss regional developments and security coordination. Confirmed: Al Jazeera reports the UK announced Tuesday Oct 20 it will deploy fighter jets to help defend Saudi Arabia, and the UK Ministry of Defence said that means Typhoons for defensive counter-air, military advisers and an A400M transport. Confirmed: Al Jazeera reports France is sending military assets to help protect the Red Sea port of Yanbu under an earlier agreement.

Claimed by Elysee Palace, coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, and analyst Urban Coningham of RUSI (as reported by Al Jazeera)The Elysee told AFP that Saudi Arabia agreed to supply extra diesel to France "for as many months as necessary," and that total commitments including the UAE are 295,000 tonnes a month, just over 10% of French consumption. Al-Maliki says Houthi attacks on Riyadh and Abha airports this month killed 19 and injured over 300. Streeting called the attacks "absolutely despicable." London and Paris describe their support as defensive; Coningham says the Houthis could see European involvement as "offensive" and, in Al Jazeera's paraphrase, treat the countries as belligerents.

  • UK and France: Describe the moves as defensive solidarity and energy security.
  • Analysts quoted: Say the deployments risk drawing the two countries into the Saudi-Houthi war.
  • Houthis: No statement appears in the source article.

Israeli soldiers detain olive-harvest volunteers; Brad Lander freed

What is known

ConfirmedAl Jazeera reports Israeli soldiers detained volunteers (about 80, per Rabbis for Human Rights) helping Palestinian farmers harvest olives near Nahalin, outside Bethlehem in the West Bank. Confirmed: Al Jazeera reports Brad Lander, the Democratic nominee for New York's 10th District, was released with a "warning," while others remained in custody: Lander said "several dozen," and Becca Strober's account implies everyone except Lander was still held. Confirmed: Al Jazeera reports neither the Israeli government nor the US Embassy immediately responded to its requests for comment.

Claimed by Israel's Foreign Ministry, Brad Lander, Becca Strober of Protect the Harvest Coalition, and Anton Goodman of Rabbis for Human Rights (as reported by Al Jazeera)Israel's Foreign Ministry, on X, says Lander made a "calculated political provocation," entered a restricted security area without approval and ignored instructions to coordinate. Lander says the detention was "one more attempt to undermine Palestinians' right" to harvest their groves. Strober says the harvest was peaceful with no settler violence. Rabbis for Human Rights says volunteers did not know of the closed-military-zone order and offered to leave when told.

  • Israeli Foreign Ministry: Says the volunteers entered a restricted zone without approval.
  • Volunteers and organizers: Say the harvest was peaceful and the order was unclear.

From the history: Southwest England, 1991: per Wikipedia's crop circle page, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley said they started the phenomenon in 1978 and claimed responsibility for all circles made before 1987 and for more than 200 crop circles from 1978 to 1991, using a plank of wood, rope and a baseball cap fitted with a loop of wire. They made a circle in front of journalists, and cerealogist (a self-described crop circle researcher) Pat Delgado examined it and declared it authentic before the hoax was revealed. Wikipedia cites press coverage in Today on 9 Sept 1991 and The New York Times on 10 Sept 1991.
