Claude Agents Uncover Novel CRISPR-Like Enzyme System

Anthropic's life-sciences research group ran about 950 Claude agents for 21 hours through 200,000 candidate enzymes and surfaced a previously unknown CRISPR-like system, with CRISPR pioneer Feng Zhang calling the finding intriguing.

By The Gayzette, with Claude · 1 min read · Wonder ◆◆◆◆◇

Anthropic's newly launched life-sciences research group set about 950 Claude agents loose for 21 hours — roughly 210 million tokens of work — scanning 200,000 reverse transcriptases (enzymes that copy RNA into DNA) for anything unusual. The agents narrowed that pool to 3,500 candidates, then to a short list of just 20 systems worth a closer look.

NEW ENZYME!

Among those 20, the agents flagged a previously uncharacterized bacteriophage (a virus that infects bacteria) enzyme family they're calling "array-associated reverse transcriptases," or ART — built with a CRISPR-array-like structure, the same repeating-sequence architecture CRISPR gene-editing tools are built on. A technical preprint accompanied the announcement, and CRISPR pioneer Feng Zhang called the finding "genuinely intriguing."

On your desk: it's the same many-agents-one-coordinator pattern behind your own n8n and Claude Code automations — a huge pool narrowed down to a short list — just running for a research team over a full day instead of a single build over an afternoon.

Editor's note

From the managing editor · Friday, Sept. 25

Good morning, you two. The lead swaps in a science story: Anthropic's life-sciences group ran about 950 Claude agents for 21 hours and surfaced a previously unknown CRISPR-like enzyme system — the same many-agents-one-coordinator pattern behind your own n8n and Claude Code builds, just at research scale. The AI Builder also covers YouTube's new Studio creator tools, the OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs pressing the UN Security Council for global AI rules, and OpenAI's new MentalHealthBench (that last one via AI Weekly's report, not OpenAI's own post — flagged lightly in the text).

Spirit runs one item, not two: the beat was quiet this week, one candidate story was a March study well outside the 30-day recency window, and a second spare was seven weeks old and never fully read. What's left is AARO's bid for access to the National UFO Historic Records Center's pre-1990 archives — itself 23 days old, said plainly in the piece.

Hurricane Polo is back at Category 5 off Mexico and heading toward Baja California Sur early next week; nothing on the watchlist airs tonight, and the Moon is one night from full.

No reactions or beat decisions are saved on the page yet, so the other sections ran at standard size. Admissions: this run was already over its 300k-token budget after scouting, so Sonnet wrote the lead instead of Opus. From World, Straight: the third item, on Netanyahu's UN speech, ran with facts only — the claim and both sides were dropped because the scout couldn't verify the speech's content beyond the protest detail. Two Good Ten candidates were cut for weak sourcing: a baby-elephant rescue in West Bengal (outside the recency window, homepage-only source) and a $30 thrift-store painting story (no specific article URL confirmed). A separate fact-checker graded 70 claims and 9 fixes were applied before this went out (a YouTube feature timeline, crop-circle history details, a Good Ten item that mixed two stories, a Venezuela "first meeting" claim, and a sky line).

YouTube's Made On YouTube 2026 Adds AI Creator Tools

YouTube unveiled a batch of new AI creator tools at its Made on YouTube 2026 event, including "Ask Studio," an AI assistant built into YouTube Studio, and dynamic AI-generated thumbnails. Two more are still to come: A/B testing three different cuts of the same Short (starting in 2027) and live AI dubbing for livestreams (piloting early 2027). These tools push automated optimization — thumbnails, edits, dubbing — directly into the free Studio dashboard rather than requiring separate paid software.

A/BNEW TOOLS

On your desk: dynamic thumbnails are exactly the kind of low-effort, high-leverage growth lever The Stacy Show can flip on inside the free Studio dashboard right now — Short A/B testing is the same idea, but it doesn't land until 2027.

Pentagon's UFO Office Seeks Access To Private Archive

The Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) is seeking a sole-source contract for a commercial data subscription to the National UFO Historic Records Center (NUFOHRC), which DefenseScoop calls the "world's largest private collection of UAP-related historical records, including hundreds of thousands of unique case files." AARO is specifically after NUFOHRC's pre-1990 archives. NUFOHRC was founded and is led by UAP historian David Marler. The contract would run a one-year base period plus four one-year options; the cost hasn't been disclosed.

OLD FILES WANTED
Illustration · The Gayzette

On your desk: this one's 23 days old — early September — and the beat was quiet this week, but it's a concrete official-UAP-office move worth having on the radar alongside your CRV study, since AARO buying up old case files is exactly the kind of archival groundwork that eventually feeds serious remote-viewing target pools.
